Juror's Statement from Ron Thurston
I have many friends in this show so I want to be honest. You’ll just have to trust me. After all, I would not be doing anyone any favors by doing them any favors. My taste in art is important to me. If imagining these paintings were to hang on my own wall, space is limited, so I picked the ones I loved best. Just like anyone else would do. And the results would vary. For me, first impression is important. If I had more time I would try to explain. Let me just say, “The eyes know what the heart wants.”
Getting asked to judge the Pittsburgh Watercolor Society Members Annual is truly an awesome responsibility. I remember asking Robert Griffing, the Eastern American Woodland Indian Painter, to judge the Waterworks. And how honored I was when he agreed and made the drive in from the North to do it. And now, years later, President Suzi Sparks asked me to be the judge of Awards. My turn.
Wow, there was a big list of painting favorites I had to narrow down, by the way. Some really cool art. I’m proud to be a member of this group. Ask me in person if you were a prize contender.

We at Pittsburgh Watercolor Society are delighted to Celebrate our Amazing Members with Waterworks 2021 including a “Live” exhibit at North Hills Arts Center and Online Exhibit on our website!
This exhibit, open to all current Pittsburgh Watercolor Society members for submission of one of their very best works, showcases new works in watercolor and other water media. We present the Waterworks exhibit each year as an excellent opportunity for all Pittsburgh Watercolor Society members to showcase new works in watercolor and other water media.
Though this is exhibit is one of our most important annually, this year it was especially important for us to do our very best to make this opportunity one of the best ever to allow our members to share the amazing work in a most accessible way. We have been dealing as best we can with current COVID restrictions. Even though last year was quite successful for our 75th Anniversary, it was a lot more difficult for many of our artists.
Juror of Awards for this year’s Waterworks was our very own “Watercolor Rock Star” Ron Thurston. In addition to being the 1st place winner at our Aqueous Open 2019, Ron is renowned artist, curator, and educator. He is a Pittsburgh based, nationally renowned Watercolor Artist, and is the recipient of several National and International Awards, including Seven American Watercolor Society International Juried Exhibitions. In addition, Ron serves as a juror for many exhibits and presents his workshops all over the country. Please read Ron’s Juror Statement.
This exhibit is a most impressive one. It is a beautiful example of “who” we are, offering a wide variety of amazing works in varying styles, subject matter and technique in water-based media on paper. In addition to visiting our Online Gallery, please take the time go see the exhibit in person at the North Hills Art Center. And… don’t forget to vote for People’s Choice!
And last, and definitely not least, I thank all who worked so hard to make this happen, including my Exhibition Co-chair, Lisa Rasmussen, who makes all kinds of magic happen including this amazing 3-D Gallery presentation! We have a great Board and some amazing volunteers on our committees who work very hard to make our exhibits and events the very best. I thank each and every one of you for all of the time, effort and love you give to PWS!
