The Face in the Mirror

 February 4 – March 30, 2024  PWS Online Gallery

… what can a “Self-Portrait ” be?

While a portrait refers to any painting that depicts a human figure, a self-portrait refers to a painting that depicts the artist that produced it. Self-portraiture, whether produced in the medium of painting or of photography, is its own distinct genre of art, like that of the landscape or the still life.

The purpose of a self-portrait is to show a reflection of the creator. It may or may not be a full or realistic depiction. Most self-portraits are images of the full frontal face or a head shot, but abstract or creative works may show, for example, one nervous eye, or the artist's hand and paint brush, as the focus.

As we open our 2024 year with our online programming, we are presenting you with this first opportunity of the year to exhibit online through our website with The Face in the Mirror!

What do you want to say about yourself? How do you see you? What do you see when you look into that mirror, on a good day? bad day? fun day? sad Day?

With these thoughts in mind, we are challenging PWS Artists to create new works for this online exhibit to be presented on our website. Works

must be on a paper surface (YUPO and Tyvek are permitted) unvarnished, and be completed with water-based media.  We are asking for new work completed between January 1, 2023 and January 30, 2024.

Our Juror of Awards is own very own, renowned Artist Peggi Habets.

Peggi Habets lives and works as an artist in her hometown of Pittsburgh, Pa. Her deep love for the fluidity and spontaneity of watercolor has led her to paint and teach in the medium for over 15 years. Her figurative and cityscape paintings have been exhibited and collected internationally and she has received awards in many prestigious shows, including the National Watercolor Society and the American Watercolor Society International Juried Exhibitions.

Publications of her work include magazine articles in The Artists Magazine, The Art of Watercolour, L'Art de L'Aquarelle, Pratique Des Arts, Watercolor Artist, Watercolor Magic, and Palette magazines. She has also been included in Splash 18-20 Best of Watercolor books. She is the author of "Watercolor Made Easy: Portraits" and was featured in "The Art of Drawing and Painting Portraits" and "Faces & Features" books. Look for an upcoming feature article of her newest series of paintings in the Spring issue of Artists Magazine 2024.
